Maybe if someone knew how to code it there could be a plugin that could borrow a small percentage of processor and gpu power from people on the server and mine the blockchain through minecraft. Or we could create a mining pool just for the server if people would be willing to let their machines mine when not in use, one machine mining won't make a difference but if we all chip in we may be able to do some good. Just an idea.

Unfortunately it's just not practical to think that a few people mining on their own would generate enough BTC to get this program restarted.
Better to just accept that it's done, and try to adjust and find other reasons for people to come to the server.

same, but my computer isn't the best and I need it to last a few more months, so I can't afford to lose it, hahaha. I do have an old desktop that's almost always running, though, I'd be wiling to have it mine in the background, but someone would have to explain to me how to do that, hahaha.

Major has a point, too, but I'd still be willing to do that, even if all it could do was help to put a little bit towards keeping the server up.

Well, those are two different things.
If you want to do some mining to donate toward the server, then good for you.
It just won't be enough to restart the BTC program as a whole.

I'm not being negative, I'm being realistic.
I was doing a lot of mining on my own for a while there.
I bought some equipment, dedicated a machine to it, etc.
Ultimately it's just not worth it any more.

I agree that we should stop trying to bring back BTC, because its not realistic that it can be kept up forever, and you shouldn't have to dedicate your machines to creating a way for players to make money. I feel like we should try to move away from Bitcoins being the main reason people want to come here and find something else that makes us special. I've HEARD that mining for BTC can be pretty hard on your computer anyways, and I personally wouldn't want to lower the life expectancy of mine anymore than I have to :/ They don't come cheap after all. With a little effort, I'm sure we can find our specialness outside providing currency :)

This is basically it in a nutshell. I've been telling anyone who would listen (which is a surprisingly short list) starting well before the BTC ran out.

The BTC is over. The constant stream of new players coming for that is over. Rather than ignoring that or, worse, thinking it's a good thing somehow (I still don't get that), it's time to forge a new identity and make the server fun in this new environment. Well, it's about a year past time to start that but better late than never.

The problem is, there are a lot of factors that are working against any sort of change.

A high-end graphics card can make maybe 1 GH/s for bitcoin mining. Using a mining calculator, we can see that 1 GH/s would make about $0.02 worth of bitcoin in a month.

So while I appreciate the attitude of wanting to help, mining with computers these days is utterly useless - you need purpose-built mining machines to compete anymore!

Well, we could always come up with our own cryptocurrency, it's being done more than you think and sometimes they actually take off (ex: dogcoin which originally was intended as a joke). Maybe it gains some serious momentum maybe it doesn't, it will at least be something fun to add to this server and we'd be the first minecraft server to have our own cryptocurrency. I've been tossing around the idea of starting one myself, but I doubt I have the programming skill. I understand about the bitcoin part though.

This has been suggested before, and I think the answer remains about the same.
There's no technical reason it can't be done, it's certainly possible. And some people might enjoy it.
As long as people realize that it very likely will not be worth much of anything, and probably will not draw new players looking to collect it.
It seems like more of a little feel-good for people who've been on the server for a while.

It could be something fun to mess around with, maybe players could use it to buy resources from each other. It doesn't have to be valuable, but it would be unique to the server as well as possibly further expanding on cryptocurrency as a whole.

This is a great idea! Our biggest problem is finding someone able and willing to dedicate their time to creating this. We seem to be awfully good at planning and ideas, but putting plans into action is a whole other story.

Does anyone have the ability, and most importantly TIME to spend on a project like this? I know I certainly don't have the ability. We need someone with both of those requirement covered. There's definitely no use in volunteering if one doesn't have the time either. We need positive change for the server now

A bit late perhaps, but I happen to have made my own cryptocurrency some time ago, it's quite easy and I did it for fun. I would like to do it again and make a cryptocurrency for the server, unfortunately I don't have time as I'll be joining the army in a week or so. But maybe I'll find some time if there still is any interest.

Guys I've stopped playing AGES ago. Just came here to say thanks because this server made me excited about crypto back in 2013. The few cents I was awarded in BTC has now paid up for the minecraft game itself LOL. But its nothing compared to what my teenage investments did. Just wondering if anyone here ended up becoming a crypto whale?!

I would have if I hadn't used my earnings to buy $200 worth of skylanders.... Young me was not a smart man..
