Are we EULA Compliant?

Hello all,

I saw an update for Minecraft recently that included server blacklists now. I wanted to make sure we are all up to date with our monetization policies and are only including cosmetic items for paid members. Can anybody confirm this? I would hate for the vanilla client to not let players access the server.

Thanks for a heads up on this Frothing. It has been part of our discussion since Mojang came out with this EULA concern. The difficult part, aside from the legal jargon which is born from another language and country, is the fact that there is a limited amount of clarity on what can and cannot be done. Based on what I've seen, if the server isn't up solely to get gain, and incentivizing players to donate for in-game advantages over other players, we have very little to worry about. We have made changes regarding VIP perks because of this. Chances are high that we have avoided issues with the EULA. Do you have any specific concerns? Anyone?

Truthfully, the serve population isn't huge enough to cause concern for Mojang. They are supposed to send a letter to the Server Owner letting them know they will be blacklisted if they don't comply, then about a week later the ban takes place.

As far as I can tell, you can implement server specific perks, but you can't disallow any base game items to regular players. Any perks offered by the server must be cosmetic in nature.

Things to consider:
Private warps. (Possibly workaround: 1 available to every player, VIP and above get more)
Particle Effects (Allow players to generate their own particle effects might be a good perk to introduce if another perk has to go away due to the EULA)
Fire spread (This use to be enabled for VIP not sure of the current status, but since it is a part of the base game, it can't be disallowed by white names)

Also, we should consider deleting the "Donate for a Reserved Slot" sticky thread. Reserved Slots haven't been a thing since Alpha. The first couple pages of the thread are full of people who don't play on this server anymore

Everybody has at least 10 homes in the current setup, so this is already covered.

Firespread is enabled/disabled per world, not per rank, in the current setup, so this is also covered.

As for the reserved slots, I'm not even sure we have that plugin in use anymore. Will have to poke @hacattack3000 about that.

Since this is still relevant, going to quote it here (from here):
Don't worry guys, no one is getting banned here from stating their opinion.

At the end of the day, I believe our server is one of the most compliant with the EULA, as we've always striven to not significantly affect game balance or have a "pay to win" attitude. There's a few little perks that could be in violation, but the EULA isn't clear about quantities either (i.e., if I give one playergroup 10 homes, and a donating playergroup 20 homes, is that a violation?). We don't restrict world access, or prevent players from playing 100% of the vanilla game.

That said, if Mojang has an issue with our server in particular, I am more than happy to comply with any specific set of instructions given to me. I'm not worried about them shutting us down - there's no purchased license associated with running a server, and my IP can be changed easily enough. I would imagine they will simply threaten legal action via a cease & desist letter, or something similar. And if and when that comes, we will comply with whatever they want us to change.

That's another thing, Mojang being a company probably wouldn't care if their EULA wasn't clear enough about quantities. It's their rules.

The reserved slots plugin is not on the server anymore. We maintain about 30 players a day which is only half capacity so no need for it at this point in time.

We should probably go ahead and unsticky and remove this thread ---->http://minecraftcc.com/index.php?threads/donate-for-a-permanent-reserved-slot.6/

Possibly remake the thread with up to date perks and what not. Many people seem to be confused about the Portal Gun that happened for a moment. Actually it would be interesting to see a history of perks and other short-lived ideas the server came up with. Just from the top of my head:

Plans for Garry's Mod server
Portals
Dr. Mad's RPG Server
Spawn Editing
Reserved Slots
Creative was originally only for about 5-10 top builders, now its just a form.
Lava was for VIP only
PVP before factions.
Separate IPs for the 2 worlds
An admin teleport to whomever you want on request (provided the other player agrees)

The thread has been unstickied for now to avoid confusion.
(And it has been since it was first mentioned. =P)

Since we do not have that plugin it is inaccurate as they said. It being sticky could be misleading to any soon to be VIPs but that being said it will be added back if the need arises I'm sure.
I agree to unsticky, but they also did say delete...
